During the Kelso Camera Club year, we have a number of competitions open to all members. Here you can see who won what last year, and either the winning entry or a sample of their work.
The Wilson Challenge Cup for the Most Improved Member
Towards the end of the Club year, the committee selects one member who has shown the most improvement during the year. This member will be awarded the Wilson Challenge Cup and can keep it until the same time the following year. Charlie Wilson was a member of the Kelso camera club. He owned a newsagents shop in the square in the corner along from the Cross Keys. He gave the cup to the club.

Theme-end competitions for the John Anderson Trophy
During the year we run a number of Themes with workshops, speakers and photography trips all contributing to the theme. At the end of each theme, we run a competition usually judged by a visiting speaker, resulting in a winner and two runners-up. The scores are accumulated over the year and a cup, the John Anderson Trophy, is awarded to the member with the highest aggregate score. We like to think this promotes a consistency of approach throughout the year since the themes are quite varied.
John Anderson was a stalwart of an earlier incarnation of the Kelso Camera Club. When John died (fairly recently), his family donated money for a trophy.

The Kelso Camera Club Theme Cup
At the end of each Theme throughout the camera club session, we award a trophy to the best photograph as selected by the judge for that theme. Usually we invite one of our external speakers to judge the competition for us; occasionally a senior member of the club fulfils that role.
The current holder of the Kelso Camera Club Theme Cup is Bill Hume for his winning photograph in the Monochrome Theme in May 2015.
The Blackbox Trophy for Landscape Photographs
The landscape competition was inaugurated by the first Chairman of the re-invented Kelso Camera Club Ken McKillop and was intended to encourage members to improve their photographic skills when taking landscape images. He is the judge of the competition and will, whenever possible, attend a Club meeting to give the results and provide feedback to participants.

The Avril Peoples Memorial Cup for Wildlife Photography
The Wildlife competition was set up in memory of Club member Avril Peoples, an active member who sadly died in a car crash along with her husband. Avril’s main interest in photography was Wildlife and the committee decided that this was an appropriate way of keeping Avril’s memory alive. The Winner will receive for a year the “Avril Peoples Memorial Cup”.
The Avril Peoples Memorial Cup for Wildlife Photography for 2015 – 2016 is held by Norman Dodds.
This beautiful creature was photographed in Chester Zoo.
Any concerns about the wildness of this animal can be quickly answered by jumping in beside it 🙂

Annual Exhibition Awards
During the Kelso Camera Club Annual Exhibition, members of the public are invited to vote for their favourite images on show. Then, in addition, club members also vote in a separate competition for their favourites. The winner in the public vote wins the Willie Stewart Cup. The winner of the members’ vote is also suitably recognised. In 2015, Graeme Webb with his fine picture of the Dancer won both votes quite convincingly. Graeme achieved a high degree of success with this photograph since it was also awarded maximum points in one of the Three Way Competitions we entered in 2015. Then to cap the success, Graeme’s image also won him the Morton Plate at the Border Digital Challenge event for the best image in the competition. Success indeed.
